Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Do you coach complete beginners?
Yes, I coach all levels. From never having surfed before to wanting to perform a whole repertoire of advanced maneuvers. The training is different for every level. We customize your program to meet you where you're at.
Do I have to be in the New York area to get coaching?
Absolutely not. I've designed my program so people all over the world can benefit from this system. I can coach you remotely from wherever you're at, and then you can use your discounted rate from your membership to come to New York and do an intensive or one-off sessions. You can also meet me at one of the various international locations on a surf trip, and we can do a trip together. I've designed the memberships for maximum flexibility.
Membership & Pricing
What's the minimum commitment and payment options?
There's a minimum 3-month commitment for all membership tiers. I do not do 1-month memberships. You can pay monthly or all at once—that's the payment plan. You can pause your membership if you get hurt or have other serious circumstances, but you need a bare minimum of 3 months commitment.
Are there any discounts available?
Discounts are only available for people who subscribe at the Zine, Sustain, or Progress membership levels. If you're already a Zine subscriber, you can get a 5% discount when upgrading to Sustain or Progress tiers. If you're not already a Zine subscriber and want to jump right into membership tiers, just sign up for those and you'll get the Zine as well.
What are the rates for one-off sessions and programs?
Base rates (no membership):
• One-off session: $400
• Retreat/intensive day rate: $700 (staying with me) / $600 (self-accommodation)
• Week-long intensive or retreat: $4,000
Member rates: Only available to Zine, Sustain, or Progress subscribers—you get discounted rates based on your membership tier. These are the only ways to access discounted sessions.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my membership mid-term?
You cannot upgrade or downgrade your membership mid-term. It's not flexible that way. You can change tiers after your 3-month commitment period is over.
Programming & Sessions
Do your membership packages include in-water sessions?
No, they don't. I don't promise in-water sessions upfront. There's a deeply discounted one-off rate, and if you're in the New York area and want to commit time to your in-water sessions with me, we can come up with a custom package rate to be finished within a specific time period. Or we can design an intensive where you go multiple days in a row and lay your foundations down for whatever goals you're working on.
Do I need to do the exercises in the SurfReady365 app?
You don't need to do the exercises in the SurfReady365 app. But if you do the exercises in the app, which is a major part of the membership, you will get better at surfing faster—in whatever way that looks like for you.
Do I have to do nutrition programming?
Not at all. That's up to you. People at the Progress level want the whole entire holistic package, and for them, I write meal plans and help them optimize their nutrition for their health and surfing long-term.
How do coaching calls work?
Coaching calls are scheduled through the SurfReady365 app and provide the essential accountability and support you need to achieve your surfing and health goals. A coaching call can serve many purposes:
- Review footage of yourself surfing for technique analysis
- Assess form and progression in your SurfReady365 exercises
- Plan upcoming surf trips and set goals
- Block schedule your week to make time for workouts, nutrition, and surfing (especially at Progress tier)
- Provide accountability and troubleshoot any challenges you're facing
- Adjust programming based on your progress and feedback
These calls ensure you stay consistent and motivated while working toward your surfing and health objectives.
What if I don't have access to a gym?
Perfect—you don't need access to a gym. The SurfReady365 system is designed to be adaptable to whatever you have available, whether it's your living room, a beach, or a full gym.
Can you modify workouts if I have an injury?
Yes, we will modify the workouts if you have an injury. We'll consult with as much of your PT and medical team as needed to make sure you're not doing anything to reinjure yourself.
In-Person Sessions & Equipment
How much advance notice do I need to book a one-off session?
You don't need much time in advance to book a one-off session. I recommend that you take my forecasting course to learn how to book sessions (you get the forecasting course with any of the higher tiers, or you can pay for it on its own). If you see waves that you want to surf, you can always reach out about a one-off session—even the day of. If I'm booked, I'm booked, but I try to be flexible with good surf forecasts.
When I do coaching with you in the water, do you provide equipment?
That varies location to location. In New York, I can provide surfboards—both soft and hard. I never provide wetsuits. I believe that you should own your own wetsuit. On surf trips internationally, I do not provide any equipment at all whatsoever. I can help you source a surfboard for rental locally, or help you with the logistics of bringing your board to the spot we will be surfing.
How do international trips work?
Check the trips page to see if I'm doing trips and the locations available. Send me an info request for locations you're interested in. If you're engaged in one of the higher membership tiers, you definitely get a discount on your trip. I help you plan your logistics for arrival, departure, and equipment. We make sure we're all up to speed on your ability level and that you have appropriate expectations for the trip. The day rate is $700 (base rate before applying any discounts) which includes 2 meals and driving to different surf spots.
Do you coach at a specific location in New York?
I'm based in Rockaway Beach, but I'm not beholden to any particular jetty or sandbar. I'm always checking conditions and moving around so that we can get the premium conditions for your specific progress. I also take little strike trips to New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Long Island—within reason on the East Coast. Those have a different day rate structure.
Are you CPR certified and what safety measures do you take?
Yes, I am CPR certified. I've never had to perform CPR, thank goodness, because we try to nail the safety in the beginning by reading the ocean correctly and learning to control our surfboards. It's my strong belief that the preparation we put in with mindset, ocean reading, wave judgment, and board control are the safety precautions we're taking. I never put you in conditions I don't feel you can handle or that I can't rescue you out of. If a freak accident happens, I know at any given time where the nearest clinic or hospital is, and I will take you directly there or call the fire department or local medical services.
Do you coach kids?
I'm open to coaching children, but I treat them like adults. So I'm probably not the best fit for children—you're probably better off with some kind of camp. But I will do it if the kid wants to do the whole programming.
Do you offer group discounts or rates?
That's something I could consider like friend rates on a one-off basis for trips and intensives—we could discuss that on a one-off basis. I don't do large groups in general. I never coach more than 3 people at a time in the water. That's where I cap it off.
Will my session be private or semi-private?
The ocean is unpredictable. I always make sure that if I have to go semi-private because conditions force it or we're on a trip, everybody will benefit from the session. That's part of my approach—strategy and planning things correctly so you don't have to clean up the mess after.
Results & Expectations
How quickly will I see improvement in my surfing?
You should start to see improvement right away. In terms of doing the surf-specific workouts, you should start to feel improvement in your pop-up after about 3 to 4 weeks. In-water sessions with me will give you immediate improvement—you should be about 40% better than where you were before that session. Fixing bad habits takes longer, though. Bad habits learned through neglect or poor education are the hardest and take the longest to correct.
Do you guarantee results?
Yes, I guarantee results—but you have to do the work. If I prescribe the work and you do it, you're going to get results 100%. I guarantee the work that I prescribe. 80 to 100% compliance with my prescriptions guarantees results. If you comply less than 80%, you'll get no results or spotty results. I've never seen anybody not progress as expected when they follow the program.
